Philippine Association of Medical Technologists-USA, Inc.
HISTORY
The founding of PAMET-NY has its roots in 1984. It stemmed from
an idea presented by Bernice M. Garcia to a group of medical technologists on
wintery day on December 12, 1983. Over a Chinese dinner in the corner of 23rd
and First Avenue, she proposed a plan to form an association for Filipino med
techs, of Filipino med techs and to be run by Filipino med techs. The concept of
a professional association that would uplift Filipino medical technologists in
the state of New York has fanned the enthusiasm of the founding members. They
were Elena Abis, Bobby Adarna, Violeta Ali, Lourdes Frias, Millie Gallardo, Mike
and Letty Jampayas, Fred and Pat Marfil, Angelita Naval, Juliet Prado, Leticia
Ramos, George and Linda Rivera.
The dinner culminated with the first official meeting as an association at Bobby
Adarna's residence on Januaty 14, 1984. The pioneering set of officers were:
President ........................... Ismael Jampayas
1st Vice President ............ Bobby Adarna
2nd Vice President ........... Millie Gallardo
Secretary ............................ Angelita Naval
Asst. Secretary .................. Perla Punsal
Teasurer ............................. Precilla Fadul
Asst. Teasurer .................... Erlinda Lagmay
Public Relations Officer .... Julio Valino
Auditor ................................. Fred Marfil
Under the guidance of Bernice M. Garcia, they organized and drafted the bylaws
that would govern the association. Their objectives were to promote fellowship,
foster professional association with other Filipino medical techonologists here
in the U.S.A. and establish goals toward professional growth.
In 1987, PAMET's incorporation status was achieved under the name of Philippine
Association of Medical Technologists-U.S.A., Inc. It was also the year the
scholarship progran in the Philippines was launched. In 1988, PAMET-NY, in
collaboration with PAMET-IL and PAMET-NJ, formed the national umbrella, PAMET-USA.
In the '90's, PAMET embarked on a new project. It joined the coalition of 22
professional organizations in seeking legislative approval for licensure of
medical technologists and technicians in the state of New York.
To date PAMET-NY has so far, succesfully sponsored six(6) scholarship recipients
in the Philippines. PAMET's
varied interests include its continued support of the Coalition in its fight for
licensure, involvement with continuing education, organizing fund raising events
and its proud participation in many health fairs and outreach programs. Another reflection of the
association's true character, is its solidarity support of newly formed chapter
of other states.
On October 28, 1999, the incorporated name of the association was amended to
Philippine Association of Medical Technologists-N.Y., Inc.
